Summary and Reflection

Class will begin with an introduction that covers atoms and the particles that make upt he atom. Miss Mihok will provide students with laminated pieces of construction paper that are used for making models of atoms. Each student will be given a set. Miss Mihok will walk students through the process of making a model of an atom. She will explain the charges of each subatomic particle as well as the names of each part of the atom. Then, as whole group instruction, Miss Mihok will present the SMART Notebook lesson on Atoms: Part 1. This will allow for a wide range of student participation. Students can right down their answer and then when the correct answer is chosen self-assess. After the SMART Notebook presentation Miss Mihok will have the students complete the worksheet, “Atoms: Quick Review. Later in the week (after further instruction) the students will complete a summative assessment in the form of a quiz. Each of these steps will allow for student interaction and encourage participation.
I learned that SMART Notebook is yet another option I have for developing lessons. I am particularly interested in the option for choosing the standard and grade and finding appropriate lessons. If I had SMART Notebook I would definitely use these lessons as extension opportunities. I found that the SMART Notebook was incredibly easy to use and offered a lot of flexibility as far as choosing lessons that were appropriate for one’s students and/or grade level.
